My choice of grass as well I let the "wire grass" take over my yard 12 years ago. It loves the North Carolina summers, and I love the blonde color during the winter.
My fescue isn't looking too shaby here in N. Raleigh, and I haven't watered it in years. I have some neighbors with sod and zoysia, it looks good too. FWIW, I would never try to grow a warm season grass like bermuda or zoysia from seed. The best way to go is sod or plugs.

I haven't had time to do the plugs, so I figured I buy a bag of Bermuda seed and see what happens, prior to getting the zoysia plugs a little later. I do have a lot of sprouts of Bermuda now, but we will see how they grow. With the research I had done, it seems like you have a decent shot with Bermuda seed, but as you say definitely plugs with zoysia. I think we may be headed to the farmers market Thursday, so I will see if they have any zoysia plugs there and then try it out in a small patch first.
Now if we could just get some great severe thunderstorms rolling in for the fun of it, life would be perfect. I would like to experience a hurricane here, too.
No you don't. Trust me on this. Hurricanes are not one of those "must-have" life experiences. If you never go through one, count yourself lucky.
From someone who lived in Wilmington during the 80s and 90s.....I couldn't agree more with this
