Looking for some neat music stores, that aren't necessarily chain stores. Daughter is coming to town, for the weekend, with her boyfriend who is a studio musician and plays bass in a band in Austin, TX. He specifically asked to have some time to make the rounds to such stores, but I don't know of any. Suggestions?

Schoolkids Records across from the Bell Tower on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh is my favorite. The Chapel Hill location is closed.

Do you want music stores that sell instruments and sheet music? Or ones that sell old records/cds? There are lots of both.

Fatsound Guitars, Chapel Hill Road in Cary
Indoor Storm, off of Capital Blvd. Just above the beltline

The two best independent musical instrument retailers in the area by far.

Bull City Records in Durham. On Perry street, just off ninth, next to cosmic cantina.

...but, if he's a bass player, they have a very limited selection of basses and bass equipment. I've actually noticed it go from very little to practically nothing in my several years in the area.

There's also the Music Loft in Carrboro: The Music Loft of Carrboro - Home Page

Schoolkids has new and used CD/s plus vinyls. I really cool place. Be around for 30 or more years.
