I caught the tail end of an interview on the radio this morning where the closing comments implied that the problem was caused by geese droppings. I had also heard that from a neighbor a few days ago. Has anyone else heard this? Is it true? The only information I can find is that the bacteria involved is from the digestive tracts or feces of warm-blooded animals. Geese qualify as warm-blooded.

Babies in poopy diapers are warm-blooded little critters, too.

I'm not sure what it is but it made my new puppies very sick! They had their first trip to the lake about a week ago and unfortunately drank a little too much lake water and are now taking meds to get rid of whatever they got from it. It's a shame because they REALLY enjoyed their first visit!

Oh, I am sorry about your puppies.

As for the poopy diapers -- I know that can close a pool but that is generally due to an actual leak and not a bacteria count. (Although I think bacteria counts are also taken.) I find it hard to believe that a couple of poopy diapers could pollute an area as large as a lake beach -- especially when the contamination lingers after it's been closed a couple of days. But I guess anything is possible.....

The local ABC station says it's poopy diapers.
Bacteria keep lake beaches closed - Beaches at Falls Lake remain closed due to dangerous bacteria. - 7/10/09 - Raleigh News - abc11.com

In some other story from elsewhere, a municipality banned diapers and had swim-diaper vending machines installed.

That's gross. It doesn't sound right because it seems that it would take an awful lot of mother's leaving their babies in poopy diapers in the Lake for there to be so much bacteria to shut down multiple beaches at a lake.

All I can say is EWWW. Diapers are not waterproof, they are barely water resistant. I can't stand to think that parents are using plain diapers instead of swim diapers. I'll never put a toe in that lake.
