I have some old, IBM Pentium III computers with fresh installations of Windows 2000 that I am getting rid of. Should I just take them to the recycling center? They still have some life in them, but there are so many surplus computers around that I doubt anyone wants them, as operating computers or for parts. Any suggestions?

As far as I know, the civic organizations, such as Purple Elephant and United Way, don't accept computers this old.

Try offering them for free on Freecycle or CraigsList. I bet they will be taken rather quickly.

Goodwill, or there is probably a computer recycling business.

In truth, as working computers, they are well past their useful lives. Microsoft if not already, will soon stop support for Windows 2000 OS, meaning no additional security patches will be issued for them, leaving the user of the machines very vulnerable. I would think their best use would be as spare parts.

1-800-gotjunk" takes old electronics and they recycle them. But you have to pay for them to pick the stuff up. Depending on how much you have and how heavy it is it might be of value to have them get the stuff. Before we moved long distance, we had an old tv, a non-working vacuum, a non-working dehumidifier, two huge old heavy outdated computer monitors, amongst other junk and they hauled it all away and even carried it all up from the basement. And I slept at night knowing they'd take the stuff to the appropriate places. It was a good value for me, and good riddance

They are still perfectly good for running linux on them....and they will run better than a brand new machine with Microsoft Vista on it!

It turns out that Purple Elephant DOES want them, so they're on their way to a good and useful home. I actually had more than I realized, and the peripherals are all good. Thanks for the responses.

Our desktop is a Windows XP machine with a P3 1.2 ghz processor I believe, we use it for web and media design, it's 8+ years old. Computers these days are really waaaay too powerful for what they are needed for.

Unless you are a gamer, then the computers are never quite powerful enough!
