why do the buses all travel in the middle lane of a 65mph highway going 45, pushing all the people going 55 to the left lane in front of me?

Because if they travel in the right lane, they have to deal with merging traffic, and it's difficult for them to accelerate/decelerate easily or change lanes to accommodate that traffic.

Slower traffic should obviously be to the right, but large vehicles having to jockey for space with merging traffic can wreak even more havoc.

It would really be insane if a school bus went into every single neighborhood to drop off a child.
