I'm interviewing for a new job that would require me from SW Durham (just up the street from Southpoint) to Sanford. I know that's quite a commute distance-wise, but it's actually LESS than my current commute to the west side of Greensboro!
My question is, what's the traffic like on this commute? I see a few options for getting there. I could take 15/501 all the way down, or take I-40 to US-1, or 55 to US-1, or....
Which route would you recommend? Will any of them lead me into some known high congestion areas?
I live in Lee County and work on Alexander, right next to the P.O. I pass right by your area, depending on how I go.
I have about 10 variations, and they all take the same amount of time, but if you work IN sanford, I suggest the following:
Get onto 751 and go south. Cross over on (I forgot the name of the) Road. (It's the one just before Horton Pond, and just after Martha's Chapel). At the end of the road, take a left on Beaver Creek Road. Go through the light at Wilsonville (cross 64) and then take a right on Pea Ridge Road. That will take you all the way to US1 and you can go South. Then, it depends on where you work. If it's in town, you might look at Colon Road as an option. If it's over near Cody and all that, you can save time with the new Connector.
I've been doing this commute for over 8 years, and I get really bored, so I time the different routes, and this one is the best for coming into Sanford. A coworker uses it too.
As a sidenote, if you are working in the Moncure Industrial Area, you can use this same route, but don't get off at US1, OR You could take 55 to OLD US 1. You can skip the bottleneck of Apex Traffic by taking the Peakway.
The first drive I mentioned is not so bad. All Country roads. 751 can get crowded at Rush Hour, but usually moves OK. Plus, you will be going AGAINST traffic, which is a plus. If you can skew your hours a little early, that helps get you out of rushhour too. That's what I have done.
I've been commuting from NW Raleigh near the Durham border to Sanford for 2 months. It's not that bad. I take 40-->Rt 1 and just stay on that. It's opposite the rush hour traffic, so I find it peaceful. Also, my company offers a VanPool so many days I pick that up on Rt 55 in Cary, which saves a lot on gas.
