Moving from NY. Need the best schools in Raleigh. What are the neighborhoods(subdivisions) to look into? I've been looking at:

Hillcrest Farm, Crescent Ridge, Thornburg Ridge, Barham Place, Greycliff, Forrest Ridge, Covington Ridge, Prestwicke, Wrenn Meadow, Dansforth, Bishops Grant, Leesville Hollow, Stone Ridge, Brandywine, Braeloch, Creekside@Stonegate, Bedford at Falls River, The Reserve at Umstead, Heritage-Midlands.

Please help me narrow down. Any information is very much appreciated.

Depends on what your parameters are for the "best schools". If you're looking strictly at test scores which will change yearly, you can look them up at NC School Report Cards

Magnet schools seem to be the best. Otherwise look in N. Raleigh.

I have been in North Carolina since I was a kid. I have been here since 1974 and attended Wake County Schools. I enjoyed it. It has grown a lot since 1989 when I graduated from Broughton High School. Please e-mail me at terrybmccann@usa.com and I can give you more specifics. Move to the Old North State. It is a good place to be. There are a lot of New Yorkers and other yankees here, too.

They can be.....but they aren't for every family. Several kids in my daughter's class are not returning for 7th grade......but wild horse couldn't drag my daughter away.....and unless you live in the base area, there is no guarantee of getting in.

There are good schools all over Wake County....much depends on what the family wants/needs.

I'd first narrow down what general area of Wake County you want to live in, then visit/research the schools in that area,

Lacy and Broughton are 2 of the best public schools in Raleigh. Wake County is going through some crazy times right now with too many kids and not enough seats. Not so with these 2 schools. When are you moving? Have you found a house yet?

My long distance research as well as advice from friends down there, who are familiar with our school system here in MA, are pushing me towards Cary. But not every school in Cary is the same either, so I've narrowed my choices down there, too.

I was more impressed by the overall metrics of the schools in Cary vs. Clayton. Not that Clayton schools were terrible. But if we go down there, I'll be working in Durham and that's yet another reason to stay out of Johnston County. Your situation might be different.

Also, I'm coming from MA and I'll try to say this without sounding snobby. It's just a fact that the Northeast and Upper Midwest states in general have the best education curriculums. So I want to duplicate that as much as possible, hence my leaning towards Cary. That being said however, public higher education here in MA is terrible and can't hold a candle to NC or VA.
