I'm looking for a place to buy a lot of Pine Straw, and I would like to have it delivered. I know Home Depot sells it by the bale, but I'm hoping it will be cheaper to buy it in bulk and have it delivered. The area I need it for is 65' long by 7' wide. Are there any Landscape supply places that sell it in bulk?
Try The Mulch Masters - they have a location on the edge of Cary/Apex and a location in Raleigh. We got mulch there a few weeks ago and I know they had pine straw on their list. We picked up, but I know they will also deliver.
You might also try Family Garden in Apex, right on Hwy 55. Nice people to do business with, and they will deliver straw, or put you in-touch with the fellow who delivers it for them.
I order 25 bales at a time from Ken's Nursery on Morrisville Carpenter Road, and he delivers them to the house for me. I think I paid roughly $4/bale this past Fall.
Its hard to do an apples-apples comparison of pine straw pricing because the bales can be inconsistent. While PSD may not be the cheapest, I've always found them to deliver consistent, quality product.
Having just moved here from Atlanta I was blown away at the pine straw prices. I used to get 50 large bales delivered for $2.75 per bale and for a quarter extra they would spread. Most of that comes from South Georgia and is in ready supply but not so here I guess. Actually I see very little pine straw used here. Mostly composed hardwood bark. Now I know why. I have taken advantage of free fresh hardwood mulch delivered right where I want it but I have to let it decompose a few months before I actually use it in my beds or it will kill my plants. Not the dark color I prefer but the price is right and eventually it will be the color I like.
Any tree cutting service will give you their load for free. All you gotta do is ask.
Don't quote me, but I think I paid $3.45 a bale last time I ordered long leaf needles. The slash (shorter) needles are slightly less expensive.
I have no data to prove this, but it always seemed to me that watering was more efficient with straw as you didn't need to saturate the top layer of bark mulch before water went to the roots. I'd be interested if anyone has seen empirical studies?
After the tragic townhouse fire a few years ago their was talk of banning pine straw use in certain areas. I don't think any laws were passed.
i moved here from MA and was blown away by pine straw. usually people try to clean that stuff up, not spread it around their property!
seriously though, isn't having all that thin, dry plant matter lying around kind of a fire hazard?
