We have to decide over the weekend whether we would prefer to accept a job offer in Raleigh or in Charlotte. The money is about equal, so we don't know how to choose.
The most important things to us are (roughly in order): quality schools, a vibrant Unitarian church, access to health food stores, vegetarian-friendliness, a liberal/progressive bent, reasonable traffic, good shopping, lots of things to do, quality construction, and a pleasant climate.
Given that, anyone care to say which city is a better match? Thanks!
Raleigh! We were in a similar debate this week as my husband is being considered for a job in Charlotte. We've never been to Charlotte, but hear that the schools aren't as good as Wake County/Chapel Hill/Carrboro. There also seems to be more culture and diversity in the Triangle area due to the colleges. Obviously, I'm no expert since I've never been to Charlotte, but hopefully you and your family will be happy no matter which city you choose.

From what I have heard from my charlotte friends, raleigh (well really chapel hill and durham) tends to be a bit more liberal than charlotte. Charlotte doesn't seem to attract as many people from all over the country, which, in my opinion, leads to more diversity. I think raleigh has a bit more of an international community because of all of the companies in rtp that do business overseas.
I echo all of these statements; Raleigh is much more 'international', there are people from ALL OVER the country and world here. There are quite a few health food stores, three major shopping malls in the area with other large shopping centers, and the schools here are better than Charlotte. I believe there are a few Whole Foods grocery stores which are very vegetarian-friendly. Charlotte isn't quite as liberal as Raleigh. Come on down!
