Hello all,
We are relocating to the Durham area and I would like your input on what area in and around Durham to look for house rentals at or under $1000 per month. My wife will be working at Duke University Hospital and I will be working just south of the hospital. Any ideas on the best areas to look would be appreciated. Not interested in townhomes or apartments, just single family detached homes. What are good neigborhoods or areas of the city and suburbs?

A friend of mine is pursuing her MBA at Duke U. She found her home on Craigslist. I visited her there. Nice house, and the rent is very reasonable. She has a small baby, and the place is roomy. It is in East Durham, walking distance from the E. campus, since she plans to walk or bus to school.

Probably not east Durham if she can walk to east campus--East Durham would be east of downtown. Could be Trinity Park/Trinity Heights...

Also check the Duke Forest neighborhood south of Duke's west campus. I know there are some rentals here. In particular there's one on cornwallis rd at the corner of Dogwood.

But if you're working at the hospital or close to it, the most convenient neighborhood is going to be Old West Durham, which is south of Club and west of 9th Street. Mostly older bungalow-style homes...
