While I am not a big fan of most of the fast growing screen trees I understand how they can be desirable to people looking for a fast screen. Even if you go with all evergreens I would still try and mix up the types that you use. If you get 20-30 of the same tree and one of them gets a disease 5 years from now it will likely spread to all of them if they are all the same kind of tree. Also, by mixing things up if one dies or is damaged in a storm it can be replaced and will not stick out like a sore thumb.
FWIW, I absolutely had to go with a line of fast growing trees along the backyard I would consider staggering them and planting a few shrubs in front of them for a mixture of color and to provide some depth to the landscape.
Nice link.. I did some reading this afternoon and found out I can plant trees or shrubs that grow up to 12' tall on the utility easement behind my house. I'll definitely be looking for some inexpensive screening plants to put in!
My favorites are Fragrant Tea Olive (smells absolutely wonderful), Emerald Green Arborvitae, Silver King Euonymus and Nellie Stevens Holly. I have several of all of these and they do so well with such little care. The Arborvitaes and Tea Olives have grown the fastest but I really love the Silver King Euonymus mixed in because of the variegated leaves. You should try to incorporate a few different ones too as others have stated. You could also put in a large trellis in the middle as a focal point with an evergreen vine that flowers in summer or spring to kind of break it up. Put a little bistro table and 2 chairs in front of it and you have a nice little retreat area.

wow...can you come do my yard? I am SOOOO bad at landscaping stuff, but your idea sounds lovely!
Yeah, definitely don't consider bamboo. We're trying desperately to get ours under control and cut back so that we can actually have a backyard. I don't know who planted it (it's been here at least ten years that I know of...we've been here for six months), but I'd like to have a word with them.
