I am not sure I got your "They walked away with about $60,000 after fees". Do they sell their home and make a net profit on home price of $60,000? or something else? I might misunderstand, as with no comparable or no information on what they did on their home during those 10 years that net profit value is meaningless. Take that as a question, not a critic.
My point is...with all the negative talk about KB Homes, they still appreciate well and if in desirable areas, will sell quickly.
And, 10 years later, the home inspector didn't find much in the way of needed repairs.
I have a Centex home without housewrap beneath the siding. Built mid 90's. Was this against code back then?
It's Masonite siding, right?
No housewrap was required.
Masonite was face-nailed while fiber-cement/Hardiplank is not.
That face-nailing seals better against driven rain. (Well, until someone went 10 years without a real paint job, and the siding falls off. ) I suspect if anyone built a Masonite-sided home today, it would either have Zip-system or housewrap required.
If you want a good chuckle, pull up the list of complainants in the class action suit, who claim a violation, and then look at their NC Property Disclosures when they have sold.
"No problems with siding" on almost all of them. I wonder if they could take the payout in good conscience.
What fun!

Thanks Mike, appreciate the info. yes...Masonite. I did have problems on the north side of my house and had to strip down to and replace the plastic vapor barrier against my insulation. Theory was that before I installed irrigation, my sprinkler was hitting the house and some water seepage occurred past the seal. Had a bit of mold on an interior electrical socket face! Pulled some sections off wall of that side of the house and saw mold on the outside of the vapor barrier. The cutout for the outlet provided an air escape for the mold to follow. $7k later and I now have housewrap, new sheathing, and cement board on that side.
