It depends! It depends on where you are going to work in durham. Living in durham is always an option! I live in wake forest, west side of town (west of capital blvd), and it is 35 minutes from my house to miami blvd, duke university hospital, etc. It would be longer to other parts of rtp though.
Most of the homes on this side of capital are on larger lots (usually an acre) because we are all on septic (and in wake county, not the city limits, so we pay 1/2 of the amount of tax), so the density of population is not as high as other neighborhoods in the city limits. I have found the schools to be very good, but my kids are only at the elementary school level right now, so that is the only experience I have. I love the town of wake forest, great feel, very nice parks, has almost anything I would need on a daily basis.
A lot dpepends on how much $$$ you are looking to spend on housing.
FWIW, if I worked in Durham I would probably live in Durham.
Right.
Concerning schools, I would add Chapel Hill, where you can get an older home on 1/2 acre not too far off 15/501, for that 30 minute commute.
And even NW Cary, also great schools and an easy pop up 55 into Durham.
Like Leigh said, that 30 minute radius is highly dependent on where you will be working in Durham.

I technically work in Durham, but I am right in the shadow of RDU and probably 20 minutes from downtown Durham. For a 30 minute commute from here, I could live practically in Garner.
However, for downtown Durham, 20 minutes gets you to the airport, the northern tip of Cary, all of Durham, and probably most/all of Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.
Right, price wise up to 330K, the work location is North Durham, not far from Braggtown.
Since you are pretty far north I would even check out Bahama. Hillsborough would be really nice too. In North Durham check out Hardscrabble (Hillsborough address) and in Hillsborough check out Churton Grove. They both have 1/2 acre lots and larger.
I wanted to add that in Bahama you can check out Black Horse Run. All the neighborhoods I've listed are HOA's with a pool and tennis and are at the top of your price range. Is that what you are looking for or would you like a non HOA?

I would have said Trinity Park in Durham last week...but not this week. I have a friend that lives there and she has heard gun shots before, but nothing that was happening right in her neighborhood. This past sunday a Duke student was robbed and shot in broad daylight in Trinity Park. Just be careful and look at crime maps anywhere you may decide to live.
