in the 1500 block/area?

Is this a higher crime area? I'm still trying to figure out where exactly the area that has been warned as Central East Durham is. I don't scare easily: I've stayed in Chicago many times, lived in St. Paul, MN and Pittsburgh so I'm used to cities that have safe, safe but need to be careful, and don't go there areas. I just don't want to pursue housing in the don't go there area.

Or how about Janet St in the 2500 block/area of Durham?

Regarding Geer St. -- east of US 70, IIRC, it's a mix of a formerly rural area with pockets of a few nearer houses here and there. Mostly working-class and some middle-class area. West of US 70, it heads into some really rough neighborhoods where I typically don't drive after dark. A Super WalMart is going in a bit further east (near where Glenn School Rd, Geer and Junction Sts meet) and I think you're going to see a lot of new housing there and probably some growth/economic development in the next few years. I'd keep an eye on traffic/noise from the US 70/I-85 intersection.

I don't know James St. From looking at it on the map, it looks like it's on the border of Forest Hills (one of the nicest city neighborhoods in Durham, great neighborhood assn.), Tuscaloosa-Lakewood (a diverse neighborhood with well-kept homes and some older/less-maintained houses, and a very active neighborhood association), and the West End (a more economically disadvantaged neighborhood with some crime, but nothing like East Durham -- mostly property crime.) That area changes street by street and block by block, and I'm out of town right now, but will try to drive near when I'm back.

I agree with bullcity rising. Durham does change block to block. I just bought a home off of HWY 98 in east durham, but if I drive 1 mile down the road (Toward Downtown) I enter into a pretty rough area. I can tell you that off HWY 98 Starting with Clayton road all the way to wake forest is EXCELLENT! Quiet, and affordable. Sine the turn in the housing market, there have been a ton of foreclosures. So there are GREAT homes available for even greater prices. And I am excited about the new Wal-mart, because we would have to drive all the way to raleigh to a Super Wal-mart and the wal-mart prices.
Just puttin' in my two cents....

Have a good day!
-Jen

Hate to bump a 5 year old thread, but i found this through a google search. All of your posts are very informative and i have been looking at houses in the Landon farms community which is just under a mile from the Wal-Mart you mentioned. In your opinion is that far enough away from the neighborhoods you don't drive through after dark? From a google maps search it looks like a quiet middle class neighborhood. I am from MA and have not had a chance to visit the area yet. I will obviously look myself at the area before deciding to move there, but i was just looking for some basic info before i get the chance to fly down there for a few weeks.

Yes. There are several long streets in Durham that stretch across huge parts of Durham and have good parts and rough parts. Geer St. is one of them. The rougher parts are closer to downtown.

The Downtown parts of Geer are going through big changes.

While i appreciate the response, you never acknowledged the part of East geer i was talking about. Do you think the Landom Farms community is far enough outside of the "rough" part of town to ppl looking for a relatively safe neighborhood?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. My yes was answering your question in your original post. Yes, it is far enough away from the rougher parts of Geer. Not even in the same zip code (not that zips mean anything in Durham).

Thanks, i guess i overlooked the yes in your original response. Seeing it with a clearer mind this morning I can see you did answer the question. The crime data looked low for the area, but the prices in the neighborhood had me a little cautious. Looks like some very good deals. Maybe because of the noise from the highway? Doesn't look like that would be a big issue to me though
