Ain't that the truth! I live in southern Durham and I love it. I have friends all over the Triangle (Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, Knightdale, Apex) and they all seem really happy where they are. It's really hard to go wrong here. You just have to find the area that's best for you.

Matthew, could you give us a little bit more info on your personal definition of "charming"? Do you want a neighborhood with a suburban feel or something closer to downtown? Are you interested in brand new construction or would you prefer an older, established neighborhood? If you prefer older, is 20 years too old? 30? 40? Would you like to live in a neighborhood that has a swimming pool or other amenities (tennis courts, soccer fields)?

If at all possible, rent for a while first. The Triangle is HUGE and it's hard to explore it properly during a few short trips. If you rent, you'll have time to thoroughly visit all of the towns here and find the right permanent home for your family. It would be a shame if you rushed to purchase a home in one town only to discover 2 months into your lives here that you prefer another town on the whole other side of the Triangle.

Default MrsSteel - good questions!

I would say we don't prefer cookie-cutter MCmansion types - then again, that new construction is likely where the amenities are! Ideally, we prefer center-hall colonial style homes with character and charm, not the new construction models packed into a tight yard with the multiple triangles in the roof (do you know what I mean?) Suburbs or city doesn't matter, as long as we can walk somewhere to get breakfast, a paper, etc.

Five Points -- inside the Beltline -- in Raleigh -- is for you if you don't want a house that's too big. The prices are high.
