So I am slowly removing plants from my square foot garden and have turned my attention to ideas for things to grow in the fall months. I'm thinking along the lines of lettuce, spinach, kale ect... I've started some seeds indoors, but was curious if any veteran gardners out there could tell me the best time to put these cool weather crops out in my garden. What month is best for that in this area? Late September? Early October?

Thanks for the tips!

I planted spinach, sugar snap peas and cilantro from seed last weekend. Broccoli can probably go in now too.

I planted kale, lettuce, and chard all from seed, directly in the (container) garden three days ago and all are up now. I'm not from around here, but I'm ambitious. Hope they all take.

You must have done something incredibly wrong to already have to be taking your summer crops out of your garden. Did you have issues? You should have been able to get another several weeks out of it. Is this your first time gardening? It takes a few years of misses before you get some good steady hits.

I forgot about pumkins. I wish I had room for those!

I'm taking my summer plants out too. It's not an issue of having done something wrong! I know I could get another couple of tomatoes and peppers, but the main crop is pretty much over. When you only have a small amount of room for a garden, you have to remove something in order to be able to put something else in! It's getting late to be planting fall crops, so it's time!

^^ Lamishra knows what she is talking about.

Besides, the deer in my neighborhood have already relieved me of the chore of removing many of my plants. I am working on a plan to keep them out of this next crop.

As others have pointed out, if you want fall veggies, now is the time to plant.

Not to hijack North_Raleigh_Guy's OP, but since we are discussing fall planting and the deer problem, how feasible is it to plant those pretty ornamental cabbage for use in the landscape? The garden center charges about $5 each so I thought I'd start some from seed and use them in my landscape. Am I asking for trouble?
