I moved to Chapel Hill about nine months ago from Richmond. I work in the "downtown" section of Carrboro near Weaver Street Market and it's absolutely miserable! Everyone seems to be pissed off and self-righteous in every way, from the bumper stickers to the elitist attitudes. Coming from the West End of Richmond, I'm used to the old money gun rack and summer home set, which I'm totally fine with because they are very welcoming and social people. Chapel Hill is more like the near West End of Richmond and Charlottesville, but still way stuffier.

I thought I leaned left politically before moving here! You'd think that a more "progressive" thinking community would lead to a more laid-back and friendly atmosphere, but it's not the case in Carrboro!

Point taken - there is a lot of that in Carrboro. I find the place a bit more laid-back and relaxed than you do, but I tend to be pretty dispassionate about politics.

Gotta love your comment on the bumper stickers! My wife, who grew up in the late years of the Soviet Union where Lenin's portrait was in all their schoolbooks, gets a great kick out of the plethora of socialist realist portrait stickers of our president. Only in Carrboro have I really seen these silly bumper stickers - as well as all the other anti-business, anti-oil, and anti-this, that and the other stickers --- all on cars being driven by people who are obviously privileged enough to own cars and drive them and have the time to Moderator cut: language about how unfair the world is...

Okay, rant over. Carrboro is much more than Weaver Street (thank goodness), although the Weaver Street area still has quite a bit to offer those who have no interest in the politics and the attitudes of the more vocal and visible element (the restaurants, for example!)
