Most companies should charge 1/2 that -assuming your lot is 1/2 acre or less. I have been interviewing several - all quoted $500 or less. Refundable if they do some major work ($5k or more). Their plans would include detailed bed layouts: plant types, spacing, etc.

They will fill out with what your budget & preferences allow. Which ultimately puts u & wife right back into the drivers seat. eg. I like ornamental grasses lithrope, dwarf mondo, etc. Design will place in beds "artistically" arranged. Which in many cases is simply staggered rows.

If I tell him Nandina - poof - now I have nice staggered rows of nandina

I think it becomes worth it if u have 0 motivation to discover what works in your own space. Eg. Nandina needs full sun. And what the heck is nandina

This is what I was thinking too. Perhaps there is a student who would like to earn some beer money Or perhaps a professor could use our yard as a design project for the class and I could get 10 or 20 ideas from his students.

My lot is .86 acres, but the area that we would be landscaping is probably 1/2 to 3/4 acres as the back portion is wooded.

Please PM me with the companies that you are interviewing and have liked. Maybe I'll contact them too. Although my wife will also balk at $500, I'm afraid.
