I would like to take the family to see some leaves in the mountains here in NC....we live in east Raleigh...any reccomendations? We'd prefer a day trip, so nothing too far away please!

Raleigh is a good way away from the mountains. You are looking at about four hours getting there from the interstate(?) I guess. But Wilksborough is a good place, along with Linville. I like grandfather mountain and Black Mountain. Marrow Mountain may be the closest to Raliegh.

You can do a day trip - we've done it many times. I live in Zebulon, which is farther east than you. I'd suggest Pilot Mountain, which will take you about 2.5 hours. Mount Airy (Andy Griffith's hometown and the inspiration for Mayberry) is nearby. You can easily enter the Blue Ridge Parkway from there, and drive for a bit. We usually go as far as Meadows of Dan (to see Mabry Mill) before heading back.

Of course, how far you go depends on how much you do along the way. For instance, if you decide to hike some trails at Pilot Mountain, you might not want to drive as far as Mabry Mill. It's completely up to you.

I'll second the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mabry Mill. I'd say pretty much anywhere on the Blue Ridge Parkway is good for viewing leaves. Make sure to go on a clear day so you can see the scenery from the overlooks.

For a REALLY SHORT trip...take a drive down Creedmoor Road to Creedmoor.

Nope, not kidding. In October, when the leaves change, the trip from the intersection of Creedmoor Road/Strickland Road into Creedmoor is very hilly and very scenic!

The mountains are great for this (Blowing Rock) but for close to home, try an afternoon in the NC State Arboretum or a walk through Duke Gardens.

Uwharrie National Park is only a 2 hour drive and is very scenic.

Last year we went to Boone and it was incredible! This year we are going to the Hot Air Balloon festival in Statesville and the leaves should be great then too!

Tough to get far enough west in a day to really enjoy. If you have the time, I highly suggest a trip to Asheville (beautiful foliage) and a tour of Biltmore.
