I am scouting for the best home security companies from which to purchase a security system with 24/7 monitoring. I did a search on Google and the consumer report 2008 and 2009 #1 choice is a company called "Protect America" instead of the more popular brand name companies.

Is anyone familiar with this company and if so, how is your experience with their product? In addition, I would like to know of your personal choices and why you choose your particular company. Thanks folks.

Hubby has been in corporate security for nearly 30 years. Small industry, everyone knows each other. When we moved down he went with Vector Security in Raleigh on recommendation from industry folks.

I have done a ton of research lately in home security. Protect America has a horrible reputation. Mostly regarding their contracts, customer service, etc, etc. You can get the same eqipment they use at SafeMart.com. I suggest the Simon XT if you are willing to install yourself.

I just found this article on Google and it really peeked my interest and found it very interesting because I have been fielding calls from different security companies, and they all have some reason to negatively point a finger at the other guy (hilarious) . Anyway, this really opened my eyes to whom is being real with me and whom is feeding a lot of garbage

BTW, here is the link that I forgot to post http://www.frontpointsecurity.com/files/uploads/0000/0265/Top_10_Questions_to_Ask_an_Alarm_Company.pdf (broken link)

save your cash and do your own
Home Security Store | Home Security Camera | Wireless Security Systems
then get monitoring for about $10/mo

CPI wants way too much per month, if I remember correctly it was around $35/mo for two-way voice.

Today's units are web controlled, wireless and you can hook up cameras, X10 devices to turn on and off lights, cell back up, the works.

The crap the dealer promote is like 2 door sensors, one motion and one smoke. Junk

I take it you are pretty savvy at doing this yourself, but what about the average person who does not ... now what? Yes, though it is not rocket science and someone that is not a security specialist may be able to do this on their own, most people do not. In addition, with everyone in the industry having their own convincing argument why one should use their system and company, it only adds to the confusion and uncertainty of what type of security system is best

There are questions like :-

1). Is a hard-wired system the way to go?
2). Is a wireless system more efficient or even better than a hard-wired system?
3) Will the insurance company even discount my rates if they know that I installed the system myself?

There is really so much to this than is advertised on TV. I have discovered that what is advertised is a very basic package with not much of everything. What about the home that has quite a bit of windows and other entry points to secure? This all can add up very fast in order to have this done properly. I have time to research this and will continue to rely also not only on what I read but on the experience of others.

See the link in my earlier post #6 above.
