Magnolia Grill is nice, but really not my favorite. The food is on par with the others, but I just don't like the atmosphere there. Way too noisy, which I find detracts from the meal.
I wholeheartedly agree! As good as the food might be, for me the dining experience is diminished when I can't carry on a normal conversation because the place is just so noisy!
For good food at a reasonable price my top three would be:
1) The Federal-- the first and in my opinion still the best gastropub in the Triangle. Food of similar quality costs 50% more elsewhere. Service can be spotty on Friday and Saturday nights.
2) Piedmont-- pretty space, usually very good, moderately priced food. Former chefs at The Federal.
3) Tonali-- gourmet Mexican cuisine; chef/owner was a former sous chef at Four Square. Locally sourced products used in dishes.

A hint. The area up by the bar (both the tables and the bar stools) are for walk ins. And that area is much less noisy than the main area...that's where we sit when it is just a couple of us.
Has anyone tried that Cuban Revolution Place at Brightleaf? It looks fun!
I've picked up lunch from there, and thought it was pretty good. For date night though, Nana's is the best, hands down.
