I was just wondering, without asking anyone's salary, what kind of cut in pay percentage wise did you take to move here if you did take one?

My husband was offered a job. They offered him 35 % less than what he is making now. Granted, we are in California, but not an area of California that has high salaries. When he told me what they offered I said "Huh?" "Surely I heard that number wrong!"
The problem is, he is not in a field that pays high in the first place so to take a pay cut like that is not doable for us. Unless we want to live in a tent...

Where he applied would not negotiate at all and I believe is known for low salaries. So, we continue to look. I have my teaching credential, but am considering going into another field, or another job in the school system. I hope this all works out...

I got a 6% raise in base salary and the new company covers all of my medical, dental, and vision benefits. BUT. . . . the bonuses are half of what my old company gave out (12% vs 6%) and the new company matches less of a percentage to my 401K. So, in the end, it was about wash.

My husband is a software engineer and took a 7% pay cut, and a HUGE blow to our medical benefits (though the reason for that was going from a large company to a tiny one) - higher copays and a premium at 3x the cost. That said, we were able to get a lot more for our $$$ than we could have gotten in Northern Virginia. The lowest offer he got was from a company that wanted to pay him 50% of his salary Fortunately, I found the job on a headhunter site that listed the pay range and he was able to confirm it before the face to face interview happened.

I'm a software engineer for a telecommunications company. My job is in real-time embedded software (i.e., not business or financial software, and not IT related).

From Philly to RTP, about a 33% cut. But I was at the high end of the scale in Philly, and now at the low end of the scale in RTP. So that should be the most extreme case. I'm in IT, Sr. System Administrator by trade. Given that you're coming from Cali, 35% might not be too far off the mark.

My advice? Take it. IBM is one of the biggest employers in the area, and they are about to flood the job market with thousands of unemployed white collar workers. So if you have a good offer on the table it's probably best to jump on it before the IBM layoffs drive down local wages.

I haven't made the move yet, but the interviews I have been on and in working with recruiter I don't expect to have to take a pay cut (though I was expecting one).

Another idea would be to find a company whose headquarters are in a different state. For example, my husband's company is based outside of Boston, and their pay structures across the country are set in Boston, so he's making a Boston salary for his job in North Carolina.

I was relocated back to the US from Europe. The company wanted me to live in San Francisco, but I refused (too expensive, not near my aging parents). My decision to live here did not effect my salary negotiations one bit. In my profession (software sales), many sales execs work from home. Although we're a SF based company, top management is spread out across the continental US. We're very virtual. Probably a trend that will increase. So don't limit your search to Raleigh based firms......

what is happening with IBM? are the jobs being offshored to India? be interesting to understand the impact on house prices if 1000's of white collar jobs disappear.
