Both of these groups are active and meet regularly, and there is a lot of crossover between the two. Most members of the Chapel Hill Homeschool group are also in THEA, I believe. We were more active in this group when we lived near the South Point area of Durham but not too much anymore now that we're in north Raleigh. Good luck!
Google Homeschooling Bargain Mom, your be amazed at what your find, at the local and naitonal levels, but remind me to give you some important info first here too, some groups are not what they "seem" to be here, you have to be careful what you get involved with here. Some do have ulterior motives to banish it from the inside out. So remind me to comment further here for you!

I am not trolling, I am seriously wondering why you are choosing this.
Some families do homeschool well....especially if they use networking groups for social activities, and don't use homeschooling as a excuse to isolate their children. There are also plenty of outlets, especially with the internet, for specialized classes that parents may not be able to offer. (Some parents also co-op to provide classes if a parent has a certain skill like higher math or Spanish.)
On the other hand, I've seem homeschooling abused, parents that don't believe in educating girls with any rigor, to keep their kids away from mandatory reporters because they are being abused, or just because they have a very warped view of the school structure in the new area they are moving to.
We are moving to the area and will be continuing to homeschool 3 of our 5 children. I briefly looked in the Catholic schools locally, but then compared the $1000 tuition for the accredited home program we use, and over $10,000 we would pay for a "perhaps Catholic" school, my decision was made. This will be our 5th year homeschooling and my kids are avid readers and score very high (99%) on standardized tests.
I am a certified teacher and decided 10 years ago that when I had children they would NOT go to public school. They are not social recluses and are involved in art class, riding lessons, Cub Scouts, CCD, Little Flowers girl's club, piano lessons, not to mention having lots of free time to play and be kids.
