I'm relocating from Charlotte in the next two months and need some serious help on where to live. I'm a 31 year old single female (with pup!) and will be starting with 0 friends in the area So I want to maximize the opportunity to be around fun, outgoing people like me! I'll be working in west cary near where 540 dead ends into 55. I definitely want to rent, at least until I really get to know the area. Considering downtown, maybe north hills, brier creek or even close to work. I'm social, love to do dinner and drinks but NOT a rockstar partier anymore. I work weekends so a 'college' atmosphere with late nights and loud kids won't work. Any help is so appreciated!

A lot depends on what you want from your environment. Do you want to be walking distance to all the places you will likely be meeting your friends for dinner and/or drinks? Would you rather be somewhere that is super quiet and you will need to get in the car to go anywhere?

I'm right around your age and really enjoy living in the Glenwood South nightlife district close to downtown. I can walk anywhere downtown from there, and bike to several other points of intereste nearby, such as Cameron Village, NCSU, parks, etc. On the weekends it gets very busy, but there is not really a lot of noise that bothers me. I had more annoying noise from my neighbors in my NW Raleigh apartment complex than I have living a few blocks from many bars and the train tracks!

You might check out the Cameron Village area itself, as it is a little bit farther removed from all the action, but still close enough to walk or bike. There are condos and apartments in that area that are reasonably priced. It is a very nice area.

I second Cameron Village or Glenwood South area. Both lovely areas! I used to live in Cameron Village, and there was a little bit of everything near me (one college kid [who was quiet luckily!] families, gay families, older adults, young adults, etc) It was a nice mix and I enjoyed the diversity!

Brier Creek is overdeveloped and busy... plus Hwy 70 is a bear to deal with traffic, lights, etc. You really can't walk anywhere in Brier Creek either...

I agree, traffic out there can get pretty crazy... plus, I would not want to have to deal with the traffic lights on Hwy 70 after a night out downtown.

Cameron Village is very nice, just moved here several months ago... we made the mistake of choosing Cary when we first moved to Raleigh (bad decision--at least for us). Like Miamiblue said, it's far enough away from the action but still within 1-1.5 miles of all the bars--plus our condo is much quieter than the apt we had in Cary as well. However, you really have to consider your distance to work as a main priority, as you'll be there more frequently than anywhere else.
