I've always said living in North Raleigh is quite similar to living in the Rochester area, specifically the suburb of Greece, New York, where I lived.
I had no adjusting to do. I am and have always been a soft-spoken, extremely nice person. I was always used to store clerks, restaurant personnel -- and anyone else one happens to meet -- making small talk. It's no big deal. It's what I'm used to.
I am, however, a keen observer of human nature.
(I did, of course, have to adjust to the terminology.)
I thought you were referring to the "Shopping Etiquette" that was an "add-on" to the Survival Guide and that the previoius post-er said was a load of crap.
You're forgiven. And thank you for coming to my defense.

Sorry for mentioning it at all (which was intended to be coming to your defense, but we all know what "good intentions" get you on the Internet! )
What a load of crap. Sorry but really? The problem is not the people from the "North" it's the fact that everyone is so slow here for everything lol and they feel like they need to chit chat with you about every single little thing and give you a freaking smile. Cut the crap...this isn't a girl scout camp out.
My advice: be yourself, live your life according to your rules and what you feel is right. If you don't feel like saying hello, don't say hello. If you don't feel like being extra nice because that is the "southern way" don't be extra nice.
First off, I may not have a dog in this fight, because I'm an Ohioan who's thinking about maybe relocating to NC someday (tossup between Raleigh and Charlotte)...I read posts on both this forum and the Charlotte one EVERY DAY, and I admit I've grown quite fond of some of the posters, not to mention having gotten loads of good info like that which lovesbrentwood wrote about in her thread...
But, frankly, when I see a reply like this, sarcastic intent or not, it makes my blood boil...I realize of course that NOT EVERY person from the north acts like the types lovesbrentwood describes---that's generalizing and stereotyping, and I won't stoop to that level...
Having said that, maybe it's just me, but I get a little sick and tired of all that NY/NJ hollering/screaming go-go-go I'm a tough guy/girl BS...it's not necessary, and frankly, if someone comes at me like that, then depending on the day of the week, they may be greeted in return with either A) both my extended middle digits or B) my extended fist...
I happen to LIKE a slower pace, and the Southern way seems most accomodating to me...if you want to yamma yamma yamma and yell at the top of your lungs like a 2-yr old on steroids, thinking somebody's going to give you an extra cookie because you're some kind of tough guy wannabe, then that's your business...
But don't come here and belittle someone who's only trying to provide helpful information, because 'that's the way we do it up North', because I and a lot of others will tell you to STAY up North, and keep all that unwanted volume and attitude to yourself
Someone may have already mentioned this but 540 is not referred to at the outer beltline but rather the outer loop. It's a small but distinctive difference.
Howzabout some consistency in highway designations?

Hey.
If it can't be "THE 540," why should it able to be "THE Outer Loop?"
If it's "540" shouldn't it be "Outer Loop?"
Yep. You guessed it. It's "another Saturday night of reckless and wild abandon in Cary..."
I've lived here 17 years, and I've never heard of either beltline referred to as a loop.
I'm from Rochester, NY, where there is both an Outer Loop and an Inner Loop. So if I'd heard them referred to that way, I would have remembered.
Who says Outer and Inner Loop? Who said those were the right terms? Hmmm?
If it's "official," it's meaningless, because no one uses those terms.
