The eyeglass industry special interest groups are probably already paying off politicians to create a law against them.

Regarding pricing, try an independent OD and you may be able to negotiate the cash price of the visit. Typically they charge insurance companies as much as possible, knowing they may only get reimbursed for part of the visit (their "contracted" price) and offer lower rates to cash paying customers. It's worth a shot to find a doctor you have heard good things about and at least go in and ask nicely face-to-face to see if they can work with you.

Since we moved to the area in 1997, my wife and I have gone to Vision Park:

VisionPark Optometry, PA
(919) 870-1880
8311 Bandford Way, Suite 105
Raleigh, NC 27615

Aside: They used to be on Capital but moved in the past couple of years. Both Dr. K and Dr. Moore are very nice and competent doctors. They encouraged my wife and I to get LASIK in 2000 and it was the BEST thing I ever did for myself.

I wish there was one, but I live right on 440 so I'm pretty centrally located.
