Hello all,

I dropped my laptop (from all of 1.5ft - off of an aerobed that I am using as a couch right now- a long story...) and now the hard drive wont boot up. I know very little about the hardware of computers so I am gonna have to take it to a shop here but dont want to take it to the Geek Squad. Any Suggestions?
Thanks!

Please don't take this to the any of the larger chains...They will charge an arm and a leg and do a half-ass job.

Did you create, or do you have, a set of recovery CDs or DVDs for the machine? If you do, you can try to boot up the machine with those. You may have to replace the hard drive, but they are fairly inexpensive now.

If the machine does boot up from the recovery CDs/DVDs, do you have a back-up of the important data of your hard drive? If not, there are some tools to get the data out of a damaged drive.

If you don't mind, please post what you find and I'll see if I can help.

If you dropped it, the hard drive might be physically damaged and beyond repair or recovery. Hopefully it's just the motherboard or a loose connection so you don't lose your data.
