We're looking to get away in a few weeks for an overnight WITHOUT the little one. Any recommendations of places to go within 1-2 hours from the area or even within the area?

How about Asheville...a spa wkend at the Grove Park Inn..I've always wanted to do that I"ve stayed in the town of A/ville many times but never at the Inn. Downtown has the cutest stores..a great place to walk around.
Maybe also Charleston, SC. Neither is within 2 hrs of here but certainly worth the drive.

Another option is Pinehurst. We enjoy weekend getaways there and don't even play golf. Nice little village to walk around, beautiful grounds, lots of things to do. Especially fun around the holidays.

Fearrington Inn. The inn is very romantic, and you can walk over for a wonderful meal at the restaurant. Be forewarned, though - both the inn and restaurant are expensive.

The Washington Duke Inn maybe? I've never been but my parents have stayed there a couple times when they've come to visit and they love it.

Okay, I LOL'd at "UNCfan" recommending the Washington Duke Inn.

Hey traitor, why not tell them to take a tour of that lovely old gothic cathedral they've got over there at the same time?

Asheville is wonderful about four hours away. Pinehurst is pretty nice. If you can afford it the Fearrington House is wonderful. I would probably go to the Umstead Hotel in Cary like Vicki says. The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill is lovely, great food, and you can walk to University activities.
