We live in Wake Forest and my 10-year-old daughter struggles with ADD Inattentive (not hyperactivity) and all academic areas. She is shy (significant anxiety) and avoids asking questions in class because she does not want to embarrass herself (any more than she feels when she is pulled out multiple times a day.) She is in 4th grade (has been held back once and has an IEP.) This has been a very difficult year for her so far at Jones Dairy Elementary.
She has a younger sibling who will be starting Kindergarten next year and I'd like to put them both in the Franklin Academy lottery for next year. I have heard many wonderful things about Franklin Academy, but I have never talked with a parent of a child that requires special education about this school. I know it has a "college prep" high school, which I'd like to know how special education children fit into that mold.
Secondly, I've noticed a few schools in Wake County that are for Talented and Gifted students... are there any designed for struggling students?
If I were in your situation, I would call Franklin Academy and ask to speak to the person who deals with IEP's, etc. Talk with them, get a feel for their services, etc. I do know that they do Direct Instruction, and you may want to read up on that and determine how your daughter would thrive in that environment. Franklin Academy, generally, gets about 1200 applications for 100 spots. It is tough to get in.
There is another charter school, Endeavor Charter, that started maybe 3 years ago (it could be 2 years ago), but that may be another place to call and chat with the personnel there regarding her IEP.
I do not believe there are any public schools that are specifically geared toward kids with learning differences, I know there are private ones though.
