Hello,
In searching the posts on here I've seen a few recommendation for auto repair centers, which I tried first. Here's the situation:
I have a Nissan Altima which seemed to be in pristine condition--I just had a tune up and brakes done, so I'm thinking its fine (its only an 03). Wouldn't start the other day for some odd reason...
Anyway, WASP in Durham that everyone recommends doesn't take Nissans. So I had it towed to the other place everyone recommended: Choice Auto in Raleigh. They want to charge me $100 JUST TO LOOK AT IT AND DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!! I'm used to a $50, maybe even $75 diagnostic fee, which is usually waived if you do the work there, or even credited to the final bill. This fee seems ridiculous to me. I need it towed somewhere else ASAP-- HELP please!!! Thanks all!

By the time you pay to have it towed elsewhere you would probably exceed the difference in the diagnostic fee.

I have AAA, so towing is free, and that's not a problem. (I don't want to take it to the local AAA b/c they had some [quite a few] negative reviews on google).

LOL good point
I just want somewhere that won't take advantage of me (b/c I'm a woman) and will do a good job. Tired of being ripped off, overcharged, and still ending up with poor results from work I paid good money for

Where are you located? I'm assuming Holly Springs is out of your way, but I highly recommend Pinnacle Automotive in HS.

FVMommy,
Thanks for the recommendation. HS is not out of my way actually, I live in Apex, so it's closer than the other recommendation in Carrboro. Thanks for the suggestion--I'll check them out!

Default Apex mechanic

I just went to Gaston's Garage in Apex and I had a good experience. They also sell tires at a fair price. I researched then on the internet before I went there and I couldn't find a bad comment. Good luck!

Most shops charge $90 plus to check a car out now...to start. I have often found that you get what you pay for. Cheap cost may mean shortcuts will be taken...aftermarket parts, improper diagnostic. I deliver auto parts and see many different shops daily. John West Auto Service keeps a pristine shop...not JUST the waiting area. He is meticulous in all he does. I have heard great things about him too. There are many Nissan dealers around. One advantage of the dealer is that he sees your car daily and knows what issues they have and how to resolve. It may be worth calling the dealer and describing the problem and see if it is a known condition. Chances are they will say to bring it in and they can't diagnose over the phone...but if you describe it properly they should be able to tell you the problem. They just might not tell YOU unless you have them diagnose it.
