Living in the Northeast, with a basement, means having a deumidifier during the humidity. It can easily be filled daily. Is there a need for a dehumidifier in Raleigh? We do not have a basement, but we do have a third floor walk up.

We have a third floor that is finished and we haven't ever had any issues with needing a dehumidifier. Even in unfinished spaces, people don't seem to need them here. I remember my friends had a house at smith mountain lake in virginia with a basement and they definitely needed a dehumidifier. I haven't ever experienced that here. So, I have also had a home with an unfinished basement and it was never damp there either.

I would say you are not going to need it!

If your house has a crawl space and does not have a vapor barrier you will need it. It gets super humid down here and a vapor barrier or a dehumidifier will keep mold from growing on your old shoes in your closet.

YES! I have been in NC since 1998 and every summer we run our dehumidifier, sometimes daily. Even with AC it isn't enough. You can tell when it's very humid because the air will develop a mildewy smell, ick.

I'd pack the dehumidifier. The humidity runs high and there are times in the spring and fall when it's not hot enough for the A/C (which reduces the humidity) but dehumidification is needed. Also, a dehumifier is recommended for crawl spaces. See Advanced Energy, http://www.advancedenergy.org/buildi.../crawl_spaces/.

Good site alice_61. It certainly makes closed crawl spaces seem the way to go. And if you have the HVAC venting to the crawlspace that should negate any need for a demunidifier, though I'd be curious to see which would be the more costly option in regards to utility bills.

Question do you need a dehumidifier in slab homes?

What about slab homes? Is there a need for a dehumidifier? Is the central air enough?

gastric,

If you read through the full 75 page guide "Closed Crawl Space" from Advanced Energy, I believe they recommend HVAC venting to the crawl space plus a stand alone dehumifier in the crawl space that turns on only when needed (spring, fall).
