l am a teacher here in Durham and want to move closer to work. Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap, but nice apartments? I can't really afford to pay more than $600 unfortunately.

You didn't say where "work" is that you want to be closer to--that will make a big difference in the responses.

Check out the Georgetown or Murchison apartment complexes in old central Durham. They're near Brightleaf Square, 9th Street, Whole Foods, etc. in quiet walkable neighborhoods.

The other night I drove from my house in Durham to a friend's house in Durham. It took nearly 30 minutes.

The answer to your question depends fully on where in Durham you will be working.
