The fire dept. used to do this, but no longer does due to liability (boo!). Know anywhere reliable to get my installation checked? This particular car doesn't have LATCH and is difficult to get the seat belt tight around the bottom because it's a 3-point belt and I'm mounting the seat in the center position.
It's not in N. Raleigh, but have you tried going to Rex, Wake Med, or another fire department? I had a baby at Rex earlier this year and my husband had them install/check our seat before the baby and I were released. The fire dept beside Rex installed our seat when our oldest was born a few years ago. I'm not sure if he didn't go back to that fire dept because they don't do it anymore or if someone at Rex just offered to do it.
Raleigh Fire will not install a car seat for you. That's not their job or anyone's for that matter but it is the responsibility of the parent. They will, however, inspect the car seat after it's installed to make sure it is correct. You have to set up an appointment and it's done on Saturdays.

I agree, but when I went there last time with the seat already installed they said "we aren't permitted to do this any longer". The guy still checked it out, but it was like a "don't tell anyone, and we won't do it again" sort of thing...I will check out the link.
It had stopped at one time so the fire dept. could reorganize it. I assure you the program is up and running now.
