The article goes on to say it does not make a difference if you include Durham into the mix or not.

Another interesting conclusion from the article is that they claim Charlotte to be "overextended" by having both an NFL and NBA team.

Big difference between putting 18K in the seats for 40 games vs. putting 50+K in the seats for 80 games (MLB). Secondly college basketball is huge in NC and one pro team may be more than enough. NFL is easy, 8 home games and 15MM people (NC and SC).

I would love to have MLB.
What a great way to spend a summer evening.

I would hate to have MLB.
How boring to have just another underfunded ball club with a payroll about the size of Derek Jeter's annual, that could never be more than a farm club for the top tier teams and a last station for tired veterans.
Went through that with the Pittsburgh Pirates for too long.

I think that Raleigh would have been as successful as Charlotte had they been selected for an NFL franchise at that time instead of Charlotte; however, not now because of the proximity of the Panthers.

As far as MLB and/ or NBA, I agree that there is not enough population to support it. Too many games.

If the Durham Bulls were ever "upgraded" to a MLB team; they could pull it off. NBA would shrivel up and die in the shadow of College basketball though.

I'm always surprised by the number of empty seats at Bulls' games. Beautiful summer evenings, tickets under $10, affordable concessions, fun stadium, and the place seems only half full (I'm no pessimist). I don't see how we could sustain a pro baseball team.
