I think this survey is a bit flawed, but it makes for interesting reading since this topic pops up on the board now and then. Bottom line, they say the Raleigh market does not have enough "total personal income" TPI to support another pro team after you take into account they already support the Hurricanes. The article goes on to say it does not make a difference if you include Durham into the mix or not.
Another interesting conclusion from the article is that they claim Charlotte to be "overextended" by having both an NFL and NBA team.

As a 'Canes fan, I like the "one-horse town" status of the Triangle when it comes to major-league sports. IMO it allows the players to connect more with the fans. When the Panthers came to Charlotte, it not only divided the sports dollar but the Hornets organization didn't really feel the love from the community anymore. A new team here regardless of the sport might jeporadize that.

I think that has more to do with George Shinn being a complete %^#&@# than any competition from the Panthers.

I'm fine with it, in fact pro sports in general is a huge waste of tax payer money.

Even though I have been in the area for about 7 years, I never really understood how Raleigh ended up with a NHL team as opposed to MLB. I actually enjoy NHL as much or more than other sports, but if the minor league teams were not here, I would think MLB would do well here. It would be great to have a MLB ballpark in downtown Raleigh. It would add a spark to the on-going growth in that area.

Um yes they did. The Panthers came into the league at the same time the Hornets were peaking in popularity, hence why I made that reference.

i don't have much interest in pro sports- but anybody can see there is a huge gap between DC and Atlanta, where an MLB team should be.
i can see how nobody wants to compete against a team that, basically, has its own tv station, though.

The triangle has a huge college sports fan base so a pro sports team in basketball and football will have to compete against those markets. I would find it hard for another NFL team to compete with the panthers just up the road in Charlotte. Not sure how well the Durham Bulls do financially but I just don't see it in this area.
