There has been a recent rash of debit card skimming thefts of Triangle SECU members. This makes me very nervous seeing how I use my debit for lots of things. Is our money protected if it is stolen this way? This makes me want to take my money out and put it into some low paying CD.
Be careful with your debit card. Look for an external skimmer, cover the keypad when you type in your password and do not use them at gas stations, because the skimmer is inside the pump station.

I am not a fan of using debit cards. (I am abnormally normal.) I write checks wherever possible. I go to my financial institution for cash withdrawals before making purchases such as gas. My checking account has minimum and maximum balances.
Not trying to be snarky, but assuming you have decent cash-flow, why not just use a credit card, enjoy the protections, enjoy the cash-back or points, and pay it in full once a month. (Assuming you can just treat a credit card as cash, and only spend money you have.)
I have not used a debit card once since Aldi started taking CC's. And other than Aldi, I don't know if I've ever used one.

Checks are infinitely more insecure than debit cards, you're whistling past the graveyard. It has your name, address, routing and account number clearly displayed without any reliable means to ensure who has access to view that information. That's all criminals need to move money out of your account.
