I am looking (possibly) looking to relocate to Raleigh (will be visiting there this weekend...very excited!) and would job searching in the PR/event planning field. Currently work in the non-profit sector, but would like to jump to corporate. Anyone have tips on this jump/networking? I am not finding these positions listed on company websites or the typical search engines(monster, careerbuilder, etc), unless it is a Director position, and I am at a 2 year experience level with a BS in Communications.
If you can stand it, I'd advise starting out at a non-profit in Raleigh to get your feet wet. It opens the doors to meet a ton of people! The jump to corporate is very difficult, especially in a new city.
Try looking into the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the MS Society, etc. It seems like they are always looking for people due to high turnover and burnout.
Try the public sector, local governments, etc. My boyfriend is a Recreation Planning and Special Events professional with over 10 years experience and he did not want a Director's job either, and found it very difficult to find jobs at his skill level. However, there were a lot more opportunities at your experience level with the City of Raleigh, Wake County and other local governments. He would have preferred a public sector job, but ended up with a private company on a whim. Public sector isn't nearly as glamorous, but often offers decent salaries and good benefits, not to mention networking opportunities. Check with the universities as well!
As for private sector, think outside the box as well. Some of the large companies here in the Triangle hire these types of positions because they contribute to the employee benefits programs (planning events for employees, fitness centers, etc.). It may not be a place you'd expect to find that type of position, but every now and then you will find one.
Thanks so much... both of those help. I am definitely open to pretty much anything but non-profit.... I just really want to find an organization that I grow and move up at, and not be job-hopping again in a couple of years.
Any other suggestions are still more than welcome!
