Lots of variables in the decision, but IMHO there are lots of pluses in having a set of real snow tires mounted on a cheap set of steel wheels. They will last many, many years if you only use them in bad weather.
Good idea if you go skiing a lot. However, tires don't last forever, even if never used. They do have a shelf life and many places say they can become dangerous in as little as 6 years even if the tread is not worn at all.

Proper storage is important ... partially deflated, not in the sun, bagged in a cool dry place away from ozone sources is the typical advice. Crawl space usually works well, avoid hot attics too.

also check online stores, amazon or ebay. i dont know how urgent it is for you, but most sellers can have stuff to you a few days after you order.

Good idea....The old "mud and snows" My daddy had a pair he put on the truck when it started to snow, and used cinder blocks to weigh down the rear axle. If the snow got too packed and slippery he put the chains over those for even better traction.

Nope, no luck yet. We're going to Snowshoe tomorrow, we've got a friend that lives there that we're staying with.

no luck at the local auto parts store, either?

if not, you'll probably have better luck at the stores closer to the mountain.

That's what I'm thinking. It looks like conditions shouldn't be that bad tomorrow, but I'll check places closer to the mtn. along the way. I tried the Crabtree Sears and the guy in automotive said there were 30 calls today alone asking about tire chains. Maybe Sears should start carrying them at our stores.
