I was driving through Downtown Durham yesterday, and noticed that the streetscape project is well on its way to completion. I especially like the new stamped concrete intersections that are under construction. I was really weary about buying a place Downtown, but after seeing the great transformation, I'm sure that I will enjoy my new location.
I'm just hoping that some stores will move in once everything is completed. The only thing that struck me as odd were those little pillars or whatever that are lining the sidewalks, creating a quasi-barrier to the street. What's everyone's thoughts on how Downtown is looking?
I'm certainly pretty psyched about how the whole thing is coming together. One month until the big festival kick-off! It's good to see that Rue Cler and Piedmont have been successful downtown and Locopops should be a big draw, too.
I posted to my blog this morning (link is in my profile) the first of a two-part piece on the West Village project, too, including some images/graphics. Site plans are now up since the project is listed in CoStar with Colliers Pinkard the leasing agent for office space and Vanguard handling the retail. This project is coming together nicely, too. Moving the Amtrak station there is still up in the air, but the project will create a nice retail streetscape/walkway between downtown and Brightleaf, which has been dead for all the years since the Liggett plant closed up and the last cigarette factory left Durham.
Not sure what those black metal posts are; my best guess is that they are meant to prevent trucks, etc. from pulling onto the sidewalk to offload packages. But who knows?
I thought the corral of black posts, if they're the same ones I'm thinking of, looked like they were waiting to be moved to permanent spots. They're light posts?
The transformation has been awesome to see. I remember reading about Kalkhof's vision in the...it must have been the late 80s... and people didn't believe it could happen. I can't wait for the celebration!
I can't wait neither! I hope it is bike friendly as I hope to ride my bike through there whenever I want to go Downtown...
