We can usually hear them in Brentwood, which I think is strange because it seems like the fair is too far away for the sound to travel.

There were fireworks at the fair and the Diwali festival in Cary too.

Based on the time this was posted, the fireworks you heard were definitely from Diwali!

That's right..... The fireworks at the Fair start at 9:45 and end at 10:00. You can set your clocks by it

I could hear the fair fireworks in N. Raleigh off of Lynn when I used to live around there. But yeh it was Cary Diwali's fireworks that you were hearing.
