I know many have asked about skate parks for their kids in the past and just wanted to pass along the skate park in Durham Central Park is open. Just love how Central Park is coming along!

Default No helmets required?

Glad to see there is a new park open but VERY surprised to see (from photos in the link) that helmets & pads are not required, especially as a liability for the city (?).

Out of curiousity do skaters have to sign a waiver? I've been to lots of parks all across the US, and the well run ones have some level of supervision.

Not to be a big downer, but it's all fun & games until someone gets hurt. The stakes in skateboarding on concrete are huge.

It is indeed required to wear helmet if you want to ride at that park but not sure about the enforcement. I do know that the guys in the skating scene hate wearing helmets therefore you have a lot of resistance towards it...

There's a police substation across the street. I think they try to enforce when they can. I brought my kids over to watch the skating one day and two cyclists were kicked out by the police.

As with anything else it is about the enforcement... my son would "rather not" wear his helmet, but if he chooses not to he is also choosing NOT TO SKATE. No helmet, no board. If I catch him without it, he doesn't get to skate, no warning... end of story.

A day of having to sit out & watch his friends skate because he was trying to get away with something is tough, but teaches them there is no wafflling when it comes to safety.

I know it is much more difficult when it comes to enforcing the teens, but if they are going to have the rule, the park needs a way to enforce it. If they don't then they are basically condoning the behavior. One warning, then you are off the course.

Skate Cary won't even tolerate an unsnapped strap on a helmet, which I think is good. If it is not secure you may as well not be wearing it. Especially when it we are talking skull vs. concrete like at the Durham park. The scales are tipped there!

One of my students keeps an injury from that park. The lastest is bruised cheek. (He does wear a helmet and knee pads at all times)

The website needs to put a map of the area in a very prominant location on the website b/c it was hard to find out where exactly it was and I had to go to google maps to do so. (although complaining here I am sure won't do anything, lol)
