I find that a sign saying 'Beware of the Rottweiler' is more effective than 'No Soliciting'

I realize the people responding to this thread already have their minds made up on the subject so bias is already there...but I have a question.

While *I* have not done this in my business, many of the "marketing gurus" in my industry say to do this:

*ding dong* "Can I help you?" "Yes Sir, my name is John Smith, I'm the owner of ABC company and I would just like to leave you some information about our company in hopes that next time you need X, Y or Z that you will keep us in mind". And hand the homeowner a brochure and business card, answer any questions they may have and say: "Thank you for your time Sir/Maam, have a great day".

Does something like that turn you off? Just curious.

It's a catch 22. There are some of us out there who provide a good service that people use, and if we mail something to intoduce our company, it gets trashed. If we email something introducing our company it gets trashed. If we telemarket, we get hung up on. Yet people are always looking for a good X in my industry and complain they can never find one.

I have no interest in talking someone into using our service, but am more intrested to make in introduction, just leave some info, and let you see I'm a professional guy with over 20 years experience and not some freak. When you need X service, call me.

Thoughts?

I don't answer the door for salespeople. And I am on the Do Not Call registry for my home phone. You are out of luck with me

Uh, um...er, okay.

But ah, I wouldn't be selling anything at all, just dropping off info and making an introduction.

I feel the same as most. I do not ever need someone coming to my door offering anything. I have Google (and City-Data!).

No. Don't ring my bell. If you are on fire, you have already passed my garden hose on the way to my front door. I do not charge you to self-extinguish.

If I need a service, I will do my research. The intrusion will be enough for you NOT to get my business. Maybe I work 3rd shift and your ringing my doorbell really ruins my day. I'll be sure to share my displeasure......

The salesmen at our door appeared to be in their late thirties or early forties. It must be the bad economy. And yes, they DO "work" for Sears, as far as it concerns the customer, even if they are contracting or sub-contracting. They are representing Sears. They argued with me, too, when I told them to leave.

Anyone wanting to drop off literature or just spend a moment to talk with them is selling something. If I need to buy anything, I have plenty of resources. I'd never do business with anyone I didn't know, especially if they were going door to door or calling me on the phone. There must be plenty of people who do, though, or they wouldn't continue doing it.

Just an FYI about the sears people also, they do not work for Sears. They get paid about 5-10 bucks per appointment they can get setup. They are basically contracted out college kids for the most part.

That's the way I feel. I don't want anyone at my front door selling anything but kids in uniforms selling cookies and popcorn

You wouldn't get an answer at my house, even if we were home. I think lots of people in the Triangle either don't open the door at all if they aren't expecting anyone, or wouldn't take kindly to such "soliciting" (which is most certainly, definitely is--what are you doing if not "soliciting" future business?). I don't know anyone who isn't at least a little peeved to have someone come onto their property and take their time over something unsolicited.

The tactic here seems to be leaving flyers on the mailbox (not "in", which is illegal, but pinned to the mailbox post or hung over the flag). Every tree service in town seems to do that to use every spring.

So JV, what kind of business IS yours? You keep hinting around about it but don't give specifics.

Let me rephrase that... I don't answer the door for anyone unless I knew they were coming -- not just salespeople...

In the comfort of my own home I don't like to be interupted. It disturbs my dog and sometimes it wakes my napping baby. I am also concerned about safety issues. That is where my ADT alarm comes in. Paranoid? Maybe... When my home without an alarm was broken into luckily I was not home.
