I am a 25 year old mother of 3 girls, and am considering moving to Cary NC from Columbia, SC. My partner already lives there, but she's only been there for a couple of months and doesn't know too much about it. I'm looking to join her up there around June or July of this year.

We're both going to be students in August, so we're non-professionals...what's the job market like? My oldest daughter will be starting pre-school...is the school system better than here in SC (I hope it is)? We're looking to rent an apartment or a house (we'd prefer a house), but not sure if there are areas that are better than others.

What is there to do as far as nightlife in Cary? Or would we have to travel to another city (like Raleigh)?

Thanks in advance.

Generally, the employment situation is not good for anyone except those who are in the healthcare field.

Unemployed "professionals" have taken hourly jobs, so finding hourly jobs isn't as easy as it used to be.

Cary is a town of subdivisions. It does have some good restaurants.

You'd have to go to Raleigh for nightspots.

you might try Durham, which has a pretty active LGBT scene, and some nightlife and good restaurants, as well as probably cheaper rent.

There's a good GLBT community here, no worries there. Durham is more lesbian, Raleigh more gay, but both are all over. Pride in September is fun, and August has the NC G/L Film Festival in Durham, probably the biggest event of the year for our community.

But, think long and hard about moving without a job--unemployment is high and rising. What fields are you in? You should absolutely line up a job BEFORE moving, lest you join the folks who have been here two years with nothing so far.

Carborro I had heard was also gay and lesbian friendly. I met a mom who lived with her partner there and they loved it. But as others have mentioned....have something lined up. I don't if your partner is already working but that will help of course. We moved in 2005 but that way before things went downhill job wise.
