Any ideas for places that sell garden soil by the cubic yard? I built my first raised bed garden this year, but it's a pretty good size (8'x8'x15" deep) and I need to fill it up with a gardening mix (soil/peat moss/compost).

I'm over by 70 and the Car Max if there is something nearby. I tried Norwood's already and it's a $35 delivery fee since I don't have a pickup (and I'd need 3 pickups full of dirt!).

You're going to be charged a delivery fee wherever you get it from. Two place I've used in the past are Mulch Masters & Carolina Mulch Express. I've had really good luck in the past getting the 50%topsoil& 50% compost/manure blend for setting up garden beds. Both of those places offer plain topsoil as well as a blend.

I used American Soil and Mulch (on highway 55). At least for mulch if you go over 12 or 15 yard the delivery is free. You can call them to check.

MulchMasters has a potting/landscaping soil that is wonderful to work with. It works well for creating planting beds. Wonderful organic content - plants grow extremely well in it.

I got mulch from American Soil and Mulch on Hwy 55... I know they have the mix you speak of... also check out Page Rd Garden Center (www.pageroadgardencenter.com) they are just off Hwy 70 and TW Alexander (not far from you) and have it too. It runs around $25/yd but I don't know about delivery fees (I drive a pickup). Good luck- I hope to get some of the mis myself in a few weeks for my garden.

I used American Soil in Mulch. I got their 50/50 screened topsoil and compost mix. Really nice stuff - my plants love it so far. I got 10 yards so had free delivery, but I think it is $35 for delivery. The soil was $24/yd3. Looks like you'll need about 3 yards. Any chance your neighbors need soil, too? For their gardens or to build up their landscape beds? You could split a delivery.

But really, $35 isn't bad, and even if you had a truck, I'd still say pay for the delivery. Soil is heavy. American Soil estimated ~1800 lbs per yd, and after hauling 1 yd in my full sized truck I realized that any delivery fee is worth it. Think of it as insurance on your rear axle, suspension and transmission.

Default Just Curious...

I need lots of soil too and am just curious, where do you have them dump the soil (driveway, lawn??), does anyone "install" or spread it for you, and what do you do if you need it tilled-in? I have a small sports car and no tools or equipment to speak of.

I've used John Atkins for the last few years because I'm on Penny Rd. close to them. Decent prices and they always deliver when they say they will.

It's harder to get them on the phone now because they have cut back on staff with business slowing down.

I would definitely recommend a 50/50 soil/compost mix.
