Can the well owners speak out on the pros/cons of having a well for a water source versus city water? I think my basic fear is that a well may run dry, but this isn't oklahoma, right? I would like to consider a home (North Durham) with a well, but I have no idea what to look for, beware of, etc.
I can speak of only positives of well water! We moved from Ma, where we had a well and like you I was a bit nervous, but after 7 years of having it, I can honestly say I miss it very much.
No bill, you can take showers, water your grass and wash your dishes without second guessing the water bill.
Clean, Clean, Clean!!! Our well water was wonderful, tasted great, we had a tank purifier and the water was crystal clean.
Never dried up as people warned us and never had ill effects, maybe we were lucky, but I would go back to well water anytime!

*if you do have kids, make sure you provide them with floride (from dentist) as well water does not have floride.
I love well water. Have always loved the clean taste. We still filter though. And no water bill is a nice perk. Also, do your research on flouride and decide for yourself if the risks of adding it are ok to you.
The house I grew up in had a well (in Cary) and we lived there for 21 years and we never had a single problem with the well. Well water tasted better than city water to me as well. We did have a little lower water pressure than city water, but that was due to our older pump.
Only cost was for the water softener pelets or whatever they are, but still in the end much cheaper than the water bills.
We live in Apex and have well water. I love it!!! It tastes so good and the pro of not having a water bill is nice as well. We have 3 children who will one day grow up to be teenagers, so that will totally come in handy one day, too!
All of my friends on city water complain that their water smells like chlorine, especially at this time of the year when the city flushes the system. I sometimes go into restaurants and order a water and don't drink it because it smells like a swimming pool. Our well water always tastes good.
Well water can absolutely have fluoride in it naturally. Have your water tested to be sure.
