I am trying to find a reputable moving company; I have heard a lot of horror stories and need to find one that is tried and true, and won't rip me off or hold what little I own hostage...
Any suggestions from those who have moved from MA to NC?
If you feel like saving a ton of money, I'd go with ABF. They bring a trailer to your house, you load it, they drive it, you unload. It cost us less than $2000 from Colorado to here. Good luck.
I'll help you by telling you who NOT to use........we got royally scaaaaroooooed by Father & Sons in 2005 in our move down here from MA. You get the phone call at 11:00 a.m. (when the truck was due here at 10) that the weight was over, you need to get us a cashier's check for $2100 to give to the driver......he's lost right now, trying to find your house.......and meanwhile, most of your whole life is on his truck. Ignored the legal language in the contract, said they never use that. What a horror show. I would have sued them if I had it to do all over again.
Give Hank a call at HMS Movers on the South Shore (Whitman?) but at any rate right near Randolph. I worked with his company for years for commercial moves and they did a lot of residential cross-country and NC relocations for various folks. Worth a try. Good luck.
I will also tell you who not to use. We used S&M back in 2004 for our move to NC. They were an agent for United out of Milford. Some of our stuff was never delivered. More than one load on the truck and we were promised a whole truck per our relo agreement. We called and got some of it back. Still missing my beloved emmaljunga bassinet that was a gorgeous discontinued style when we bought it. Searched high and low for it. Now they don't even sell Emmaljunga in the US anymore. Unfortunately didn't realize it was missing til much afterwards. My daughter was 12 at the time of the move so you can see why we didn't notice it right away. We were saving it.
We also used New England Household once for a move within MA. They are an agent for Atlas in Holliston. I had bad luck with them too. They didn't lose anything but tore up our brand new house. Scratched hardwood floors. Dinged some walls. They also ruined some furniture. The claims person was horrible. Funny, New England Household is the mover for the Red Sox Spring Training. Guess we don't have quite the same VIP status as they do, lol.
Unfortunately we don't have very good luck with movers in MA as you can see so I don't have anyone to recommend unfortunately.
We are moving from Hudson, so the areas you mentioned are very familiar!
I have checked out a website that I found in a search on one of the forums here: movingscam.com
and found some useful information. I also followed links to the DOT website for more info...
But honestly, nothing beats personal experiences- keep 'em coming!!
Now I have never used these guys, although I know someone who will be using this mover shortly. Gentle Giant Moving Company They have good ratings. You might want to take a look as they have won numerous awards.
we moved ourselves from MA to NC. definitely doable, but a lot of work. it helps to throw out a lot of your stuff first... ;-) good luck!
