My fiance and I are moving to Durham and we are looking at either NW or SW areas. We are moving from Florida. Please, if anyone can advise on good neighborhoods to live in it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. Please look at my other thread on which vehicle would be best suited for travel in North Carolina.

I moved from Orlando a few years ago. SW Durham area (specifically Southpoint) reminds me of a good mix of retail and subarbs. I know there are a few members who live near Southpoint. Hope Valley Area is also a good neighborhood. I have a friend who bought a new home in Chandellor's Ridge (I think that is the name of the development). www.thestreetsatsouthpoint.com

I chose to buy my first home in N. Durham. I like living close to 9th street. 9th street is close to Duke University, Duke Trails, Eno River, downtown, and Brightleaf Square.
I know BCR will chime in about Trinity Park area. It reminds me of Winter Park area with lots of historic homes. Hope this helps.

Could you give us more information on your price range and what you'd like? For instance, do you want new construction? Or would you prefer an established neighbourhood? Or are you open to lots of possibilities? The more information you offer, the better we can help you.

I can't offer any info on northwest Durham, but I live in southwest Durham & really love it. Check out houses in the 27713 and 27707 zip codes. I live in a neighbourhood called Woodcroft. Other large neighbourhood communities in the area include Hope Valley Farms and Woodlake. There are plenty of smaller neighbourhoods in the area that are lovely, as well as some nice new communities just south of Southpoint Mall, but their names have slipped my mind.

Thank you for your post thus far. Sorry for being vague earlier. I am looking in the price range of $150k - $230K. Would like to have atleast a quarter to a full acre so my dogs could run around outside. New construction would be ideal but I am open to other possibilities. My fiance will be attending Duke University.

I did a search with your range and you have a lot of options. I stuck to the 145-150K range for my home. I still suffer from addictive MLS lookups though I have a house now! I liked working with Cimmarron. I am not a realtor BUT I realize that they make life easier. I thought I could do it alone and quickly realized I needed someone who would go to bat for me. Find one who likes/knows Durham well and you should have some fun finding your home.

If you're willing to consider 40 year old houses with 1 acre + lots, there's several for sale up in the cole mill road area for under $200k. Great proximity to duke, quiet area, some within walking distance of eno state park.

I live in the South Square area, which is right near Duke. Unfortunately I can't help you as far as housing prices go -- I rent -- but it's really a lovely neighborhood. Right around University Drive/Old Chapel Hill Road.
