I am originally from Painesville, OH. My family moved here when I was 11 years old. I'm 34 now so I have been here quite a long time. All of my relatives still live in Lake County to this day.

To be honest with you, the economy is better here and the weather is of course better. But I severely miss seeing my Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles. I also miss the Pro Sports teams and the excitement that Northeast Ohio has for the Browns (even though times have been tough for the Browns and Indians).

The housing down here is very cookie cutter and you just don't see the tree lined neighborhoods like you do in NE Ohio. There are some in the Raleigh area, but the houses Inside the Beltline are expensive.

Good luck with your decision.

We're in the same boat with three kids (ages 3, 6, and 9) and that's why we've taken more time with our research and planning.

If it was just my wife and I, we would have already moved.

There is no climbing nearby. north of winston salem is one rock (literally). other than that, you are driving 3-5 hrs to climb. You might look at charlotte area that is closer to rock climibing area - toward the mountains.

I grew up in Cleveland and certainly don't think it was the miserable experience that you say it is. I think that is kind of subjective. We moved here about a year ago and had no problem fitting in, etc. Another friend from Cleveland just moved here 2 months ago and got a job relatively quickly as well.
We like the slower pace as well as weather that you can't beat. Downtown is more like a large neighborhood. Certainly not a booming city, however it's been pretty nice so far.

Good luck with your potential move. That's too bad your experience in Cleveland isn't like mine was. I loved growing up there! All of my family is there as well and is pretty happy.

Ramius, I think everyone has pretty much covered the topics:
Yes, it's great living here, and you would probably fit in well.
Look at the different towns/areas carefully for the best fit.
One thing...rock climbing is taking off here as well. There is a club even: The Triangle Rock Club | zspotblog (http://zspotblog.com/?p=2043 - broken link)
As for sites, most of them in the Raleigh area are indoor. You would need to go to Pilot Mountain (one poster mentioned near Winston-Salem) for the closest outdoor experience. Rockclimbing.com in Pilot Mountain, Central - Rockclimbing.com
Next best choices, I agree, are in the mountains...Asheville, Pisgah National Forest...at least a 3-5 hr drive.
But hey, 3 out of your 4 isn't bad, is it?
