My sister came into town with plans to go to Asheville and check out some neat terrain...well after the 5 hour drive down with their 1yr old they opted to cancel their plans and stick around here instead of driving another few hours west.

What is the closest mountain? What about any really cool outdoor nature/hiking/climbing/park activities close to the area?

I think the closest mountain would be Pilot Mountain:

N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation: - Welcome to Pilot Mountain State Park

The triangle land conservancy Johnson Mill trails off of Mt Sinai are beautiful right now with all the redbuds blooming. Some great trails with going up and down hills through the woods, cool hewn wood bridges.

Duke Forest off of Whitfield Rd is also real pretty with the creek running high right now.

Yeah, there's not really a mountain mountain until you get to Pilot Mountain, but if they want a pleasant hike they could go to Occoneechee mountain on the Eno in Hillsborough (which is actually a monadnock and the highest point between here and the coast).

There's also Hanging Rock which is very near Pilot Mountain.

I second the recommendation for the Eno River as a nice hiking destination with the 1 yr old N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation: - Welcome to Eno River State Park .

We're actually going to Hanging Rock State Park this weekend. We rented one of their cabins. My wife and I went there last October for some hiking, and liked it enough to bring our 2 children back with us this time. We're hoping that all of the Rhododendrons are starting to bloom. The ones in our yard are in full bloom, but not sure about there.
