My wife and I are on the search for a good garden center near the Southpoint Mall area in Durham. We are starting a vegetable garden and are having trouble locating some of the seeds/supplies we want. Sure, we've been to Lowe's, but would like to support a local business instead.

We already tried Stone Brothers in downtown Durham, but they were incredibly rude, so we'd like to take our business somewhere else. Any recommendations?

I'm shocked that Stone Brothers was rude. They have always been so incredibly kind to me. If they were closer I'm sure I'd be there every week!!!

So I live in your area and the only places I've found close to SP Mall is For Garden Sake, south on 751, just over the Chatham Co. line. But it's hit or miss on friendliness.

There is also Kiefer Landscaping on South Alston. I don't know if either of these carries seeds though. There is also Page Rd Landscaping which is near the Wake Co line off of i-40. Super nice folks. Again, not sure about seeds.

The farmer's market is usually a good place to find seedlings.

I'd love to hear if you find a good, local gardening center in our area. Good luck w/ your plantings!! Remember to cover them w/ netting so the deer don't get them. This spring they have gotten shoots off of some of my "deer resistant" plants. Ugh!

That was going to be my suggestion. We usually go there and Stone Brothers. Sorry you didn't have a good experience at Stone Bros. Durham Garden Center is off Hillsborough *ROAD* (Hillsborough St is in Raleigh silly Sant!) near the Food Lion and Bennett Pointe Grill. I saw Coach K last time I was there. Apparently, he's a regular customer. My son (who was in the middle of potty training the day we were there) almost pissed on Coach K's Escalade. But that's another story.

Default Garden center re-opening at NC54 and Barbee Rd in S. Durham???

There has been a lot of activity on the site of what formerly was a small garden center at the corner of NC54 and Barbee Rd. This business has been closed for several years, but they have been sprucing up the place recently with repaired fences, new greenhouses/shelters, and as of last weekend were stocking up on lots of plants. Looks like they were planning an imminent opening. Not sure if the ownership is the same, but in the past incarnation they seemed to be friendly enough, inventory was hit and miss but included seeds and general garden supplies in addition to plants and trees, prices were good, and they definitely qualified as a small, local business.

Might be worth a try.

To follow up, they were open for business over the weekend. Still working on getting set up, but there is already a nice selection of mainly garden plants and flowers.
